In an article published in January 2025, UCLA Health presents its “precision TMS” approach to depression, in which a brain MRI is used to neuronavigate to a personalized stimulation target for each patient. The center is one of a handful of programs in the US to use the Axilum Robotics TMS-Cobot, to target the stimulation site: it positions the coil to within a millimeter at every session and follows the patient’s head if it moves. UCLA Health also developed a new “5×5” protocol, with five TMS sessions per day for five days, which its team says appears to be at least as effective as the standard six-to-nine-week course while bringing much faster relief; this protocol is considered off-label, as it has not yet been reviewed by the FDA.
